Versatile midfielder/defender Jai Murray has become the third StreetSmarts SUNS Academy graduate drafted by the SUNS at tonight’s Telstra AFL Draft.

Murray received a bid from West Coast Eagles at Pick 17, which was quickly matched by the SUNS.

The Burleigh Bombers and Broadbeach Cats product is the third Gold Coaster selected inside the first round, joining Zeke Uwland (Pick 2) and Dylan Patterson (Pick 5).

GC SUNS National Recruiting Manager Kall Burns is excited by what the young Gold Coaster will bring to the SUNS squad.

As a member of our StreetSmarts SUNS Academy since he was 13 years old, and being a lifelong SUNS fan, we’re thrilled to see Jai live out his dream to become an AFL player at our club.

“It’s fantastic for him to realise his dream of moving on to an AFL list. With a proven ability to impact the game in numerous roles across the ground, we’re excited about what he can bring to our squad under Damien Hardwick.

“While he was impacted by injuries in 2025, he has been diligent in continuing to develop in various aspects off-field which is something we’re excited to see him continue to do as our AFL player.”

Regarded as one of the cleanest ball users in this year’s draft crop, Murray had a superb Coates Talent League campaign for the SUNS Academy, averaging 23 disposals at 81% efficiency.

He also played seven VFL matches in 2024 before being hampered by injury throughout 2025.

Murray will join his new teammates for the first day of pre-season next Monday.
