The Gold Coast SUNS wasted no time putting their stamp on the 2026 season, producing a dominant performance against the Geelong Cats last Friday night.

Hot around the contest and linked through every line, the SUNS made it clear that this is a squad playing for each other.

The ability to win the ball at source and move it with purpose kept Geelong on the back foot, forcing constant defensive work while the SUNS transitioned quickly into attack. It was a performance built on collective effort.

For defender John Noble, moments like getting forward and hitting the scoreboard, which he did twice, were simply the result of a group operating as one.

“It was obviously nice to get on the end of a couple, but it is definitely the end product of our team’s defensive work. I think we were really strong in that aspect of the game,” The 28-year-old said.

Noble highlighted the connection across half-back, where he, Joel Jeffrey, and Daniel Rioli were all also integral to supporting the attack.

“We try and play as a back six, not individuals. We might have little match ups here and there, but it’s about everyone working together,” he said.

That unity extends across the ground, with experienced players guiding emergingtalent and helping the younger group adapt to the pace and demands of AFL football.

Alongside Leo Lombard, who took out the Opening Round Telstra Star nomination, Noble highlighted the debut of the StreetSmarts Academy graduate Zeke Uwland, who made an immediate impact after a strong pre-season.

“He’s done a great job. To run out there and see his hard work pay off is really special.”

“We obviously celebrate the wins, that is part of the journey of AFL. It is a long season, but seeing the boys support each other and execute their roles shows just how connected we are as a team.

“The way everyone is meshing together, helping each other out and learning from one another, it is exciting for where this team is heading in 2026."

For Joel Jeffrey, the victory was the perfect way to kick off the season for the versatile defender. But it was the team’s commitment to structure and defensive discipline that impressed most.

“It’s obviously incredible, you always want to start a season off strong. You always want to put your best foot forward from the start and build momentum into the season. I thought we executed that very well,” he said.

Jeffrey praised the way the SUNS shut down Geelong’s preferred ball movement and turned defence into attack.

“Defence always comes first.

“We knew they wanted to find space all the time, and I felt like we shut that off pretty well.

“Going back the other way, we had about 71 inside 50s, which is an incredible amount for a game, and it gave our forwards a lot of opportunities."

Despite the result, the SUNS are keeping their feet firmly on the ground as the season gathers momentum. With connection growing, emerging talent stepping up, and the group embracing a team-first mentality, the SUNS are intent on keeping the heat up as they prepare to take on the West Coast Eagles this weekend.
