The Gold Coast SUNS are pleased to announce the AFLW priority signing of Molly Ritson to the club.

A 19-year-old inside midfielder, Ritson has lived on the Gold Coast for most of her life and plays for local club Bond University in the QAFLW.

Ritson was drafted to the Brisbane Lions after an outstanding 2017 season with Bond, before a stress fracture in her foot forced her out for all of the 2018 season.

She won a premiership with Bond prior to her injury and this year was voted in as captain after developing her leadership qualities in her period on the sidelines.

“When I wasn’t playing footy a massive focus of mine was to work on something else,” Ritson said.

“For me that was my leadership.

“To be selected captain this year was a massive honour on behalf of my teammates.

“Just to be back playing was my biggest goal, so now that I’ve gotten this opportunity with the SUNS, it’s a massive honour.”

Ritson trained in the SUNS AFLW Summer Academy and is representing the club in the QW Winter Series this season.

Her signing follows that of Lauren Ahrens and Maddy Roberts in the last month and takes the SUNS’ list to 18 players ahead of the club’s entry into the AFLW competition in 2020.
