Academy member Austin Harris named U16 All Australian

SUNS Academy prospect Austin Harris has earnt All Australian honours for his performances in the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships.

16-year-old Harris is a small defender with great natural speed and agility and impressed throughout the tournament with his impressive field kicking, intensity and ability to win one-on-one contests.

He spent a lot of time playing on the wing during the Championships and averaged 21.7 disposals, 8.7 marks, 2.3 tackles and 3.3 clearances from his three games.

Originally from Cairns, Harris was one of two Queenslanders selected in the All Australian team.

Vic Metro took out the Championship title and heavily influenced the team with seven players selected.

Vic Country (five selections), Western Australia (three) South Australia (three) Tasmania (one), Northern Territory (one) and NSW/ACT (one) rounded out the remainder of the 23-player team.

Harris, who attends Palm Beach Currumbin High School on the Gold Coast, was also named Queensland’s MVP for the tournament.

“Austin has really taken some big strides with his football since moving down to the Gold Coast,” SUNS Academy Development Coach Sam Iles said.

“It’s great for him to get some recognition for his strong form in the Under 16 boys tournament and fantastic to see another SUNS Academy success story come out of Cairns.”
