Mackay will continue to be the home-away-from-home for the Gold Coast SUNS AFLW program with the club this week announcing a partnership extension with Mackay Regional Council.

The extension will see the relationship between the two organisations extend to a decade having enjoyed a prosperous partnership since 2018.

Highlighted by six Gold Coast SUNS AFLW matches that have been hosted at Great Barrier Reef Arena since the SUNS entered the competition in 2020, the partnership has generated substantial economical, community and participation outcomes in the Mackay region.

Several players and coaching staff from the region have progressed through elite pathways onto the club’s AFLW list, with community participation recording consistent year-on-year-growth, particularly among females.

Gold Coast SUNS Deputy CEO Simon Fitzgibbon welcomed the extension which will continue to provide significant benefits for both organisations.

“We are thrilled to extend our partnership with Mackay Regional Council. The council has been an influential supporter of our club, in particular our AFLW program, for almost a decade,” Fitzgibbon said

“The partnership has produced strong outcomes, both on and off the field, for both organisations and we look forward to strengthening these ties and continuing to grow the game in Mackay.”

Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson says the extension of the partnership will continue to deliver lasting benefits for both organisations.

“This partnership has been tremendous for Mackay – boosting participation in sport, attracting visitors and driving new investment into our region,” Williamson said.

“AFL participation in Mackay has grown by 15 per cent during this period, with female participation increasing by 20 per cent, highlighting the positive impact of the collaboration on grassroots sport.

“Beyond the field, the partnership has stimulated significant economic activity through visitation, corporate delegations and community events.

“By extending the agreement until 2028 we can continue building on this momentum and showcase Mackay as a vibrant hub for sport, business and community.”
