The Gold Coast SUNS are pleased to confirm the appointment of Damien Walker to the Board of Directors.

Currently serving as the Director-General of the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, Mr Walker is a key leader of the Queensland Government’s agenda to drive economic growth and create jobs for Queenslanders.

Damien has previously held the role of Director-General of the Department of State Development, Tourism and Innovation and prior to that, the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games.

No stranger to Metricon Stadium, he successfully led the Queensland Government’s delivery of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and was critical in the move of all AFL clubs to Queensland in 2020 to keep the season going – and then ultimately, securing the AFL Grand Final for Queensland. Damien loves footy and is committed to growing AFL in Queensland.

Gold Coast SUNS Chairman Tony Cochrane highlighted the experience and expertise that Mr Walker would bring to the club’s board when welcoming him to the SUNS.

“We’re thrilled to be able to officially welcome Damien Walker to the Gold Coast SUNS Board of Directors, “Mr Cochrane said.

“Damien will provide a great new dimension to our board with his experience and expertise across extensive economic development, major events and sport.”

As a key member of the industry, Mr Walker also holds the following roles on several key state boards:

  • Economic Development Queensland Board – Chair
  • Trade and Investment Queensland Board – Member
  • Southbank Corporation Board – Member

Damien is a champion for gender equity in the workplace and a vocal leader in driving the message against domestic and family violence in our communities. He is also passionate about delivering initiatives to create opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Values that align with those shared by the Gold Coast SUNS.

Tony also took the opportunity to thank Michael Emmett who has stepped down from his position on the board earlier this year after close to three years of service.

“I’d also like to thank Michael Emmett for his service to the Gold Coast SUNS Football Club and its members, his contribution has been truly valued and we wish him all the best.”

Damien’s appointment sees the Gold Coast SUNS have nine serving members on the Board of Directors.
