Taking on the SUNS captaincy for the second year running, Tom Lynch says he is confident his side can make the most out of the 2018 season.

Lynch was once again appointed captain alongside Steven May, with the two combining to anchor the side at each end of the ground last season.

“It’s obviously a huge honour and very humbling to be voted in as captain again alongside Steven May so I’m really looking forward to taking on that leadership role again and leading the boys,” Lynch told SUNS TV.

“Obviously (I’ve got) a bit of confidence already after doing one year of it but I think I’ve learnt a lot in terms of different ways to approach different situations.

“I think (the) experience helps, so I’m looking forward to it this year.”

Faced with the prospect of leading the SUNS for nine matches away from Metricon Stadium to start the year, Lynch says it is more of an opportunity than a disadvantage.

“I think we’re all excited about it,” Lynch said.

“The only downside for it is for the fans, they won’t be able to come out and watch us at our home ground but for us we’re just embracing it.

“We’re looking forward to getting on the road … the week in Perth we’ll be able to really bond well as a team so we’re really embracing it and looking forward to it.”

Lynch and May will have two fresh faces in the leadership group to bounce ideas off in Jarrod Witts and Pearce Hanley.

Both arrived at the club at the end of 2016 and their influence over the club in that period of time has been invaluable for Lynch and the SUNS.

“Obviously they left a really good impression on the group to be voted in after just one year,” Lynch said.

“They’ll be great I think, Pearce is a bit of an experienced head so he’ll bring that experience and obviously leads on the training track and on game day.”

“For Jarrod Witts, it’s great for a central figure like a ruckman in the team to be really pushing hard for that leadership and he’s been great since he’s come over from Collingwood.”

The first opportunity for the leadership group to test their wares will be during the JLT Community Series where the SUNS will take on Geelong on March 4 in Townsville.
