Interviewed immediately after the final siren, Ablett's disappointment was clearly visible.
“We were good for three quarter but just let ourselves down in that last quarter,” Ablett said.
“It would have been good to get the win but they ran over the top of us.”
Geelong's final quarter blitz came after the Gold Coasters had at times dominated the premiership favourites in many areas, for much of the contest , the teams locked together at both the first and third quarter breaks.
The Gold Coast skipper seemed to play with an extra bounce in his step, returning to the ground where he established himself as the codes best player before stunning the Cats faithful when he defected to the sunshine state to join the GCSUNS.
Ablett received a lukewarm reception as he led the Gold Coasters out at the start of the match, however even the most hardened Cats fans were up on their feet as the SUNS skipper landed a freakish goal which is sure to be a goal of the year contender.
Even Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartell was in shock after Ablett’s unbelievable snap from beyond the arch.
“I think he reminded everyone down here the great goals he used to kick for us,” he said.
“We’re all pretty puffed chasing him around… he’s an absolute champion.”
Ablett's two goals took his tally to 11 for the season.
