The Brisbane Lions will take on Hawthorn in a NAB Challenge game at Southport Sharks home ground, Fankhauser Reserve, at 3.30pm on March 12 in what will be Gold Coast footy fans only chance to watch live AFL all season.

With the March 5 NAB Challenge clash between Brisbane and last year’s premier Geelong stolen by drenching rain, a big crowd should be on show to greet the Lions and the Hawks when they run out for their proper last hit out before the AFL Premiership season.

The Lions and the Hawks are widely tipped to feature deep into September in 2010, so both clubs will be desperate to hit the season proper with their big guns up and firing.

And when it comes to big guns, there’ll be plenty on offer.

In an offseason recruiting coup, Brisbane snared explosive full forward Brendan Fevola and with Lions captain Jonathon Brown also stalking up front, the Lions have plenty of exciting attacking options on show. Add to that a midfield including workhorse Brownlow Medallist Simon Black and tough, skilful NAB Rising Star Daniel Rich, there’s a lot to like about the Lions 2010 prospects.

But they’ll have their work cut out against this year’s version of the mighty fighting Hawks. With a forgettable 2009 season wrecked by injuries to key players, the 2008 Premiers will be keen to make amends this year.

And why shouldn’t they?

With hard nut ball magnet Sam Mitchell heading up a list including superstar Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin, big-hearted Jarryd Roughead, lightning quick Cyril Rioli and 2008 Norm Smith Medallist Luke Hodge, local fans could be in for a special afternoon of football.

With GCFC members and children under twelve able to watch the game for free, there’s no better reason to head to Fankhauser Reserve for a pre-season footy fix.  Click here to purchase your 2010 GCFC membership.
