A late Alex Davies goal has clinched a remarkable come-from-behind victory for the Gold Coast SUNS in Saturday’s VFL clash against Port Melbourne.
Trailing by as much as 33 points during the second quarter, the SUNS kicked three time-on goals in the fourth quarter to record a 12.18 (90) to 13.7 (85) win at ETU Stadium.
A second-quarter blitz from the Borough which took the margin out beyond five goals was replied to by the SUNS early in the third quarter with four straight goals, including two from Ben Long who finished the match with three majors.
It’s the third consecutive match in which Long has kicked three or more goals, having now kicked 11 goals in the last three weeks.
Port Melbourne kicked away again partway through the last quarter before late goals from Lloyd Johnston, Levi Casboult and a remarkable snap from a stoppage by Davies put the SUNS in front with less than a minute on the clock.
Casboult, alongside Long, finished with three goals while both Johnston and Jy Farrar kicked two apiece on their respective returns from injury.
Alex Sexton finished with a game-high 32 disposals while Ned Moyle dominated the ruck battle, racking up 35 hitouts and 11 clearances.
The result is the SUNS’ second victory of the VFL season ahead of next weekend’s QClash against the Brisbane Lions.
