Matt Rowell has put pen to paper, signing a two-year contract extension to remain at the Gold Coast SUNS.

The 24-year-old has become a core member of the SUNS midfield having played 98 AFL games since joining the club as pick one in the 2019 AFL Draft.

Rowell is thrilled to have extended his time in the red, gold and blue and is excited about what the future holds for the club.

“I love this club and the opportunities I have had to develop as a person and player on the Gold Coast,” Rowell said.

“There’s a real hunger for success from everyone at the club. We’re not shying away from the fact we want to play finals and win premierships and that’s something I’m excited to be part of.

“We are building something special. We want to win and make the Gold Coast community proud, and I’m looking forward to playing my role in achieving that in the years to come.”

Since an electric beginning to his AFL career, when he recorded nine Brownlow Medal votes in his first four games, Rowell has firmed his position as one of the league’s finest contested players.

Across the last three seasons, he sits among the AFL’s top clearance accumulators, also twice leading the league for tackles per game in 2023 and 2024 to go with a career-high 25 Brownlow Medal votes in 2024.

With the next two seasons now locked in on the Gold Coast, Rowell will continue to lead by example in a developing SUNS squad after also earning a position in the leadership group for the first time in 2025.

After injury hampered the early stages of his career, the Oakleigh Chargers product now also holds the longest active games streak at the club, featuring in the SUNS’ last 93 matches.

Gold Coast SUNS General Manager of Player Talent and Strategy Craig Cameron says the club is pleased to have locked in a key piece of its midfield for the next two years.

“Matt has been an important part of our midfield for a number of seasons now it’s fantastic for him to have signed on for a further two seasons,” Cameron said.

Rowell is in contention to play his 99th AFL game this Saturday against Melbourne at People First Stadium.
