There's no doubt that SUNS fans are fearless. Meet Clive Barnard, a local courier and diehard SUNS barracker who’s driven to extreme lengths to display his devotion.
Decked-out from top to bottom, no detail has been missed, ensuring that all eyes are on the SUNS.
“I travel about 300 kilometres a day, 1500 a week,” Barnard said.
“I go as far south as Mullumbimby, I go as far north as Brendale, I go as far west as Ipswich and out to Redland Bay the other way.
“This is my work truck. She goes anywhere and everywhere around the south-east corner.”
Wrapping the truck in red and gold was a long-awaited tribute for the aficionado, who initially proposed the idea to SUNS CEO Mark Evans in 2017.
“I spoke to Mark Evans about eight years ago when I bought my previous truck and I think the time wasn't right and probably just wasn't the right atmosphere for it but he never forgot about it and neither did I,” Barnard remembered.
“When I was buying this new truck and I was going through the process of getting it all built, something came back to me that we should do this again.
“After a game, I said ‘Can we have a chat, Mark? Because I’ve just got to get this done.’
“He hadn't forgotten about it. I got the all clear, the ball started rolling and it all snowballed from there”
Devoted since day one, the SUNS superfan has proudly ridden the Gold Coast’s roller coaster for sixteen years.
“2009 I'd sort of fallen out of love with the game from a previous club I supported and I wasn't really following anyone,” the foundation member said.
“Then the SUNS came along, so we jumped on board. How often do you get to do that? Jump into an AFL side from the get-go.”
“We were there for all the lows and the little highs that we've had.
“Now we're coming into a period where we're looking with the expectation that the highs are going to get higher and the lows aren't quite as low but they're devastating.
“We’re really looking forward to this home game.”
The SUNS return home to People First Stadium for the first time in four weeks this Saturday, taking on Melbourne in the club’s annual Round to RizeUp in support of families feeling domestic and family violence.
Gates open at 11:30am with first bounce at 1:20 pm. Don't miss the action, secure your seats with a SUNS membership. Limited tickets remain.
