Rhyce Shaw will be looking to see more of the SUNS system in force against GWS this Saturday at People First Stadium, Yugambeh.
The Gold Coast will be aiming for its first win of the season in front of their home crowd.
“Yeah, the record isn't great, but we're looking past that and we're looking towards how we want to play, what we want to be known as, and we're building towards that,” the GC SUNS AFLW Head Coach said.
“The first 10 minutes of the last quarter is an indication of where we want to go as a footy club, and that's the stuff that I'm really proud of and that's the stuff that we've got to build on.”
While several SUNS left the field last Saturday forcing players into different rotations, skippers Niamh McLaughlin and Lucy Single lead a brave fight.
“They're just great leaders. They're so gritty and determined, they're competitors, and they want to do what's best for the team,” Shaw said.
“Niamh's a great player, and she showed that on the weekend. We can throw her around and she just gets the job done, and that's really cool.
“Even one of our young players Mia Salisbury did the same thing. She's just got this cool head; she went down back, played mid for a bit, just adapted to wherever it was.
“I think if your captain's doing it, everyone else has got to do it.”
Shaw made light of the unique situation the SUNS face heading into Round 4.
“Injuries are an opportunity for other players to step in and make the most of it and show what they can do,” the Head Coach highlighted.
“We know how we want to play. We know what we're about. We've got high expectations and standards.
While this weekend’s opponent sit in a similar position to the SUNS with a 0-3 record, Shaw was adamant that in a tough AFLW competition every week is a challenge.
“GWS obviously haven't had the results either but they're a really good team, and they've shown their capability in certain parts of games as well, so we're not taking them lightly.
“We're concentrating on us first and foremost and what we've got to do to be consistent throughout the game.
“But we also understand that it's going to be a really tough challenge this week, and we've got to make sure that we step up to the plate in that regard.”
