The Gold Coast SUNS faced off against Essendon in their Round 4 VFL match at People First Stadium on Saturday morning. Momentum swung back and forth throughout the contest, resulting in a tightly fought battle that ultimately saw the Bombers edge out the SUNS 123–117.
Despite the narrow defeat, the SUNS’ emerging talent continued to impress, delivering several periods of strong football and offering positive signs for the season ahead.
The match marked an important moment in the club’s development pathway, with five 2025 draftees featuring together for the first time this season. Despite fluctuating momentum across the four quarters, the young cohort showed promising signs against quality opposition.
Among the five was Jai Murray, who made a particularly meaningful return after 11 months on the sidelines, sharing the field once again with long-time teammate Beau Addinsall.
“You forget how much you miss it,” Murray said post-match.
“We played under sixes together. It’s amazing to be back out there with him.”
Addinsall also returned after separate injury setbacks, with the pair lining up together for the first time in the 2026 season.
Murray made an immediate impact in his VFL season debut, slotting his first goal of the year and showing impressive composure around stoppages.
“It’s really hard in my role to kick goals,” he said.
“It was so rewarding, but it’s always nice to get one.”
In the ruck, Ned Moyle proved influential, particularly through the middle stages of the game. He finished with two goals of his own, eight score involvements and helped the SUNS generate momentum through centre clearances.
Up forward, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan led the way on the scoreboard, continuing his strong form with five goals. Ugle-Hagan was a reliable target inside 50 and applied consistent scoreboard pressure with another composed performance.
While Essendon controlled key periods, particularly in the opening and third terms, the SUNS demonstrated their ability to respond, with younger players stepping up and gaining valuable experience at VFL level.
Reflecting on the match and looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Murray remained upbeat.
“We felt we played pretty well despite the result and took some positives out of it,” he said.
“Now we’ll review the game and focus on areas for improvement, especially staying more switched on in transition and when the ball comes into our forward 50.”
