Bad weather forces cancellation of AFL match this Friday, Lions v Hawks confirmed for next week

Heavy rain on the Gold Coast over the past few days has forced the cancellation of this week’s AFL Nab Challenge game between the Brisbane Lions and Geelong Cats at Southport.

However, local AFL fans will still have an opportunity to see AFL live on the Gold Coast this year with the Lions and Hawthorn now confirmed to meet in next week’s Nab Challenge match on Friday, March 12 at 3.30pm.

Persistent rain has resulted in Southport’s Fankhauser Reserve being declared unsuitable for use by Friday with the ground now being prepared for the following week’s Nab Challenge match.

The Gold Coast Football Club has been promoting the Nab Challenge games as part of the GCFC Footy Week which has brought together a range of local club and community initiatives. These initiatives will be largely unaffected.

GCFC CEO Travis Auld said the club was disappointed on behalf of its members that it could not bring last year’s AFL Premiers Geelong to the Gold Coast to take on the Brisbane Lions.

“We apologise to our members, fans and corporate partners who had planned to attend the game but through circumstances beyond out control we are not able to deliver this week’s game,” he said.

“Ticketholders will be able to receive a full refund from Ticketmaster and we are re-scheduling our corporate events for next week.

“The good news is we are now working hard to make sure the game between the Lions and the Hawks next Friday will be something special.

“This is the only opportunity to see live AFL on the Gold Coast this year and with the Brisbane Lions and the 2008 Premiers Hawthorn, we can expect a great game as it’s the last hit out before the season starts.”
