The Gold Coast SUNS are excited to announce the signing of Kate Surman as a priority AFLW selection.

Surman, 27, is in her third year of football and plays for Maroochydore in the QAFLW on the Sunshine Coast.

She’s been a member of the SUNS’ Summer Academy over the off-season and played in this year’s QW Winter Series where she has excelled, including strong performances at the Gabba and in Perth in recent weeks.

Surman plays predominately as an inside midfielder where she can use her agility to evade tacklers and burst out of packs.

“It’s really exciting, it’s a bit overwhelming actually,” Surman said.

“It’s something that I never thought I’d do.

“The SUNS gave me the opportunity last year in the Winter Series and through the Summer Academy and I’ve started to improve.”

Surman has a background in basketball which she played growing up and works as a physiotherapist on the Sunshine Coast.

She said she was excited about the prospect of joining the SUNS family.

“The club vibe we’ve got here is awesome between the men and the women,” Surman said.

“I can only imagine when we’ve got a full listed team what it’s going to be like and the collaboration between the two of us, the men and the women.

“That’s what I probably find the best thing about the SUNS is that family vibe.”

Surman’s signature takes the SUNS’ AFLW list up to a total of 19, with three more priority selections available to fill before the deadline on August 30.

The club will then take its remaining eight picks into the NAB AFL Women’s Draft in mid-October.
