Gold Coast SUNS defender Clara Fitzpatrick has been called up to represent Ireland in the sold-out 2026 NAB AFLW Australia v Ireland match.
Fitzpatrick steps into the side in place of Adelaide Crow Grace Kelly, who has been sidelined by a hamstring injury.
After only picking up a Sherrin for the first time in 2016, the County Down product will launch her sixth AFLW season alongside SUNS teammate Niamh McLaughlin in the historic clash at Sydney oval on Saturday, 1 August.
The code-convert made her AFLW debut for the inaugural St Kilda women’s side in 2020 before joining the SUNS ahead of the 2023 season.
The 184-cm key defender has since tallied 26 games in the red, gold and blue and is excited to add another game under her belt for a tri-colour close to her heart.
“I am really proud and honoured to earn the opportunity to represent Ireland and my family in County Down,” FItzpatrick shared.
“To be a part of the first women’s match between Australia and Ireland is a surreal moment in my career.
“I never would’ve imagined I’d wind up in Australia playing professional Aussie Rules football and also have the chance to play for my country, so it’s really special, it’s unreal.”
Gold Coast SUNS General Manager of Women’s Football Erin Phillips said the club was thrilled for Fitzpatrick.
“We’re thrilled to see Clara earn the opportunity to represent Ireland,” Phillips said.
“Having two SUNS players represent their country on the big stage is a proud moment for our club as I’m sure it is for both Clara, Niamh and their families, and we can’t wait to cheer them on.”
