A much-needed break and a return home to his roots in Darwin may be the catalyst that propels Steven May’s AFL career to new heights next season.

Deep sea fishing adventures and visits to the Top End’s famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets largely dominated May’s time away from the Gold Coast.

In an exclusive interview with goldcoastfc.com.au, the 21-year-old says the mental and physical rest has him well positioned for an even tougher pre-season this summer.

“It was good to get home and see the family and do some fishing,” May said.

“After such a long year of intense training and matches it was good to take it easy and get a bit of a mental refresher.”

Playing 17 of the 22 senior matches, May produced a string of solid performances at Centre Half-Forward, before injuries to key personnel forced McKenna’s coaching hand to pinch the Gold Coaster down back.

Often taking the opposition’s best goal-kickers alongside Rory Thompson, May’s ability to bash and crash his way into the contest often saw him emerge with the football.

With the likelihood he’ll be spending more time in defence next year, May is looking forward to building up a stronger fitness base.

“The body is feeling alright and now starting to do some hard running and tough gym sessions,” he said.

“As a team we are all looking at improving as best we can, so hopefully we can enter the pre-season making sure no one is left behind and ready to come back strong.”
