Well the clock’s ticking towards the National Draft here at the Gold Coast SUNS and for Dom Ambrogio and I as the GC SUNS recruitment team it’s a kind of the lull before the storm. We’ve already done all our reconnaissance work. We really do know this year's crop inside out and backwards.
We often wonder aloud how many games of footy we’ve watched how many hours of video we’ve trawled through to get to this point. And then there’s all the statistical and scientific data.
This year there’s been some really interesting new testing come through. Lots of stuff in the psycho-motor space that analyses players’ abilities to perceive instructions and perform motor responses accordingly, a kind of simulation of decision-making when performing at elite athletic levels under extreme physical stress.
All in all this whole process has been been years of work for us. It’s a big job, but it’s one we are both extremely passionate about and we feel really fortunate to be doing what we’re doing. We’re surrounded by a really footy savvy Football Department here at the club, which is a great help.
Everyone is really united in their focus. That’s something that’s never wavered. Everyone wants to strike the balance they can between footballing talent, on and off field smarts, and cultural fit. Unsurprisingly, we’re pretty much settled on our ‘pick order’ in terms of players.
So from here on end it’ll just be regular meetings with Travis [Auld], Marcus Ashcroft, Bluey [Guy McKenna], Ken [Hinkley], Harty [Shaun Hart], and the new boys on the coaching team, Andy Lovell, Dean Solomon and Shane O’Bree.
We probably won’t be discussing anything particularly new. It’s more a case of making sure everyone’s completely up to speed with how we see the draft panning out for us and to ensure everyone’s on the same page.
