Hunger is a key ingredient to consistently successful teams. It will produce an increased level of determination, desperation and discipline when the outcome becomes important enough to individuals and a group collectively.
On Saturday our reserves team discovered this truth against a very hungry Broadbeach Cats team desperate to taste finals football after many years in the bottom half of the ladder.
At quarter time we found ourselves three goals down despite having the breeze with too much space allowed to the Cats nippy midfielders and Broadbeach applying terrific defensive pressure every time we got the ball in our hands.
After a slow start to the 2nd quarter where we slipped almost five goals behind, we began to control the game and kicked a succession of goals that drew us to within five points at the half time break.
Charlie Dixon and Nathan Ablett took many telling marks throughout the term and Liam Patrick gave us plenty of run off the wing and halfback. We were fortunate that Broadbeach missed five kickable shots.
Going with a slight breeze in the 3rd quarter we were able to control the footy a lot and enter inside our forward 50 multiple times but, like Broadbeach in the 2nd term, wasted several shots on goal which resulted in our three-quarter time lead only getting to six points.
Entering the last term we injected our number 7 draft pick from the 2010 draft, Josh Caddy, into the game.
Josh has persevered enormously to overcome a long-term foot injury and was only allowed to play one quarter in his first game back. Josh was captain of the Northern Knights TAC Cup team last year and a prominent midfield member of the Vic Metro team, also. He is a natural leader.Keep your eye on him in the next few weeks as I believe he will excite supporters with the level of footy he is capable of.
Broadbeach deserved to win in the end, kicking six goals in the final stanza and keeping their hopes of playing finals alive. The Cats hunger for the contest over four quarters was first class.
The best news out of the weekend for our club was the excellent form of Nathan Ablett. Fresh from a few weeks off, he took a large number of contested marks with several inside 50 resulting in goals. He also provided a solid target around centre half forward most of the day. From quarter time onwards, Charlie Dixon began to launch and take the sort of marks we have known he was capable of but have not seen on a consistent basis. He finished with four goals.
Joel Tippett provided his usual disciplined defensive game but added some good offensive ball use.
Jake Crawford, Taylor Hine and Liam Patrick were the others to make good contributions and earn their places in our best six players.
This week we need all of our supporters to make the journey up the highway to get behind us as we take on the Brisbane Lions reserves for a third time this year. The game is scheduled for 2pm at Coorparoo prior to the 2nd Q-clash at the Gabba. Hope you can be with us.
Go SUNS,
Harty
