Here’s what they had to say.
Mark Cornish, principal Records Solutions, Corporate Sponsor
‘My young fella Tyler’s coming through in the Gold Coast Stingrays, so I have a grassroots interest in the game in the region. But really, I just want to see it all get off the ground locally. I want to see footy progress, basically. You know, better facilities. More people involved. I’m from Melbourne and I’m a member at Essendon as well so I know you need as many members and supporters as you can to progress, so that’s another reason why I joined up.’
Ian Fraser, principal Fraser Financial Services, Corporate Sponsor
‘I just felt it was important to help establish the club here on the Gold Coast. It’s so important for the local families here on the Coast who have kids playing footy to see that they have the opportunity to play here and stay here. To have a team here to watch week in, week out will be terrific for spectators. And to have the better facilities that go along with that now that Carrara’s being redeveloped is really exciting for the place.’
Brad Scown, and wife Dee.
‘We’ve been members since pretty much the very start. We just really want to get behind footy up here. We’re from Melbourne originally, so we’ve always had an interest the game. One of the young players, Luke Russell, is staying with us as part of the club’s billet program so we have a pretty close association with what’s going on. He’s actually baby-sitting for us tonight, so that’s handy too! We’ve also got a nine year old son, Trev, who’s absolutely obsessed by the footy. In fact he used to like the Cats but he's abandoned them. Now he's a fully fledged Gold Coast fan.’
Adam Hayes, self-employed gardener
‘For me it’s kind of important to support your home town team. I was born and bred here which is almost unique for a place like the Gold Coast where so many people come from elsewhere. It’ll be great to see how the young guys come along and to watch them get better. I just want to be involved and show an interest in what the club’s doing from the get go.’
Bernie Delaney, private investigator
‘I’m an AFL person from way back - I played for Hawthorn Under 19’s in another life. So I came up here as a Hawthorn supporter and then jumped on the Lions for while, but no there’s a local team for me to be interested in. I’m keen to see a young team get started and follow the kids from the beginning to see how it all works out.’
John Davis, driving instructor, and son
John Senior: ‘I’ve got two boys who are really keen footballers and I’ve always been a fan of the game since when I was a boy, so I’ve joined up. I followed the Bears for a bit, but didn’t like it much went they went to Brisbane. It’ll be fantastic to have a team back here, a team that’s our very own. And I’m really looking forward to watching some young players emerge. Other than that, it’s local, so it’s got to be good.’
John Junior: ‘I want to be involved in my local side and have the chance to see footy every week. And I don’t have to beg Dad to drive me to Brisbane anymore! I’m looking forward to seeing the club grow and get better from the beginning.’
Dennis Legassick
‘I’m originally from Melbourne and actually played for Collingwood between 1968 and 1970. But I’ve been up here since ’84, so I’m keen to see how my local mob goes. We joined up with Bears when they came but dropped off them when they went a bit further up the road to Brisbane. It’s important for us to be a part of things from the start and to hand in for the long haul.’
