Eleven Queensland junior AFL coaching coordinators were all ears at Gold Coast Football Club’s Carrara headquarters on Wednesday when GCFC Senior Coach Guy McKenna took time out to pass on a few pointers.

McKenna has set aside time out of the rigorous demands of his own coaching position to fulfill the role of Patron of the AFLQ’s new Coach Coordinator mentoring program. The role, which is entirely voluntary, sees McKenna offer his time and experience to share coaching lessons learned over more than twenty years as a playing and coaching AFL professional to help out Coaching Coordinators for all junior clubs on the Gold Coast.

As part of the program, participants attended GCFC’s Wednesday training - the club’s most important weekly session. McKenna met with participants before, during and after training to explain his methods and provide an up close and personal ‘fly-on-the-wall’ insight into elite AFL training techniques.

After training, McKenna and GCFC Assistant Coach Ken Hinkley fielded questions and shared coaching ideas. AFLQ’s Club Development Officer, Tim Searl, said both the AFLQ and the junior clubs were hugely thankful for McKenna’s genuine and passionate interest in the program. “It’s great to have Gold Coast Football Club’s support on this new initiative. The Junior League and AFL really appreciate the time and effort Guy has dedicated to this program.”
