TRUE BLUEY AFL with Guy McKenna- Courtesy of the Gold Coast Bulletin

THERE has been a lot said and written about the VFL debut of Karmichael Hunt at the weekend.

It seems every man and his dog has a say, so I thought it was time to add my two cents to the mix.

An awful lot has been said about K's first kick, which went out on the full from a set shot from the boundary line.

Now, I wonder why we mark him harder on that than, say, a Matthew Richardson or Matthew Lloyd if they missed one with one of their first kicks when they were starting out.

I am happy to admit my first kick in senior football with Claremont went out on the full.

There should be more criticism of someone like me doing that rather than Karmichael because I grew up playing the game; I think the knocking's quite unjust.

Looking at the game itself, to finish off with two goals on debut means he has certainly impacted on the scoreboard in a match where we kicked just 11 goals.

Now, he probably won't send the DVD home to his folks and say: "Look how well I played."

But he will say he had a couple of disposals and kicked a couple of goals, so it was a good start.

He is on a three-year deal so he shouldn't be judged on one game.

Players would be in and out every week if that was the case.

K has been heavily scrutinised since his return but that's what happens when you make a decision like that and we recruit a player with his background.

It has been a massive introduction to the game for him.

When he was over in France playing rugby union for Biarritz, he was still doing a bit of Aussie rules practice.

But not a great deal as he was concentrating on union at the time because he wanted to be the best rugby player he could be.

But since he arrived back in Australia, he has been pulled from pillar to post.It has been such a massive ride for him and from a mental side of things, I think he handled himself well on Saturday.
