The announcement of the 2018 Commonwealth Games host city will take place this Saturday, and Gold Coast SUNS fans encouraged to join GC SUNS officials at the special live announcement event wearing their Gold Coast gear.
The free event, to coincide with the announcement in the Caribbean, will be held from 6.30am at the Broadwater Parklands in Southport, with guest MC’s Olympic and Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Giaan Rooney, Australian cricket legend Matthew Hayden, and Channel 9 newsreader Andrew Lofthouse.
Parliamentary Secretary assisting the Premier on the 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid, Peta-Kaye Croft MP, says the event will include plenty of activities and the chance to meet sporting heroes, a free breakfast and the live announcement on the big screen from St Kitts and Nevis.
“The live announcement event will commence from 6.30am with Tai Chi, interactive sports events and of course a free healthy breakfast for all attending,” she says.
“It will also feature a five kilometer park run and plenty of on-stage sports demonstrations and a Commonwealth country flag parade before the official announcement at 8am.
“After the announcement there’ll be a performance by hip hop sensation Justice Crew with plenty of prize giveaways.
“Win or lose this will be a fantastic event to unite the whole of the Gold Coast and we encourage as many people as possible to attend and get behind our 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid.”
Athletes in attendance to sign autographs include Commonwealth Games athletics medalist Michael Shelley, weightlifting medalist Erica Yamazaki, shooting medalist Anne-Marie Forder and canoeing medalist Lyndsie Fogarty to name a few.
The wide range of sports demonstrations includes gymnastics, rugby, boxing, hockey, badminton, squash, table tennis, netball, lawn bowls, basketball, cycling and shooting and others.
Raffle prizes will include airfares to Sydney or Melbourne, accommodation at the Sofitel Broadbeach, and family passes to Seaworld, Movie World, Wet & Wild, Dreamworld, Whitewater World and the Skypoint Observation Deck.
Plenty of parking is available at the Australia Fair Shopping Centre across the road from the event.
