For those at Metricon Stadium for the Foo Fighters concert on Saturday night - and there were over 37,000 of you - you witnessed much more than one of the world’s best rock bands going about their business. You were there as the Gold Coast finally launched an international concert venue, capable of hosting the biggest and best bands on the planet.
Just days after being named as the best AFL venue in the country, the Metricon Stadium team delivered their inaugural concert much to the delight of the near-capacity Gold Coast crowd who have for years been crying out for a venue capable of hosting international entertainers like the Foo Fighters.
After several days of torrential rain, the weather gods shone on the Gold Coast SUNS for their first non-football focussed event with concert goers enjoying near perfect conditions.
Pre-main event, the hilarious Jack Black, front man for Tenacious D entertained the masses, before Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl took centre stage, delivering an energetic performance which lasted over two hours and had the crowd dancing, singing and cheering from start to finish.
So what’s next for Metricon Stadium and music lovers across South East Queensland? Well according to Gold Coast SUNS Chief Operating Officer Andrew Travis, the sky is the limit with no restriction on the number of events the stadium could host, with applications assessed on a case-by-case basis.
"It depends what suitable acts are touring in the period from October to January," he said.
"We've had some informal discussions regarding the Big Day Out but there are a number of variables there with site suitability. We expect to have further discussions.
"We're establishing relationships with key promoters and letting them know we're available for hire in those periods. Hopefully, Saturday night's show goes a long way to showing what we can do as a venue."
The club’s social media platforms were abuzz with glowing reports during and following the Foo Fighters performance.
