The Gold Coast SUNS will wear the club’s Indigenous guernsey for the AFLW’s Indigenous Round match against West Coast in Perth.

In 2020 the SUNS were the first AFLW team to introduce an Indigenous guernsey which was worn as the club’s clash guernsey.

The guernsey was designed by local Bundjalung/Yugambeh woman Christine Slabb and represents the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The predominately blue guernsey symbolises the water which is an important pillar of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales, joined by the sun which signifies people coming together with a cultural connection.

The SUNS have three Indigenous players on the AFLW list; Paige Parker, Kalinda Howarth and Janet Baird.

“It’s an honour to wear this guernsey and celebrate Indigenous Round on the weekend,” Parker told SUNS Media.

“I think it’s important to have an Indigenous Round to recognise and celebrate our culture and the achievements of Indigenous people in our game.

“I’m looking forward to running out there and doing my family and the club proud.”

The SUNS will play West Coast at 4:10pm AEST on Sunday February 28.

The match will be broadcast live on the Seven Network, FOX FOOTY, Kayo, and via the AFL Live Official App. Matches will also be streamed live via womens.afl and the AFLW Live Official App.
