Five young SUNS have been recognised for their efforts this season by earning a nomination in the 2021 AFL Players’ Association 22Under22 squad, presented by Snaffle.

The Gold Coast SUNS have the equal-most representation in the 40-man squad (alongside Melbourne) with Charlie Ballard, Wil Powell, Jack Lukosius, Ben King and Noah Anderson nominated.

22Under22 is an annual fan-voted concept which recognises the best 22 players aged 22 and under for the entirety of the season, including finals.

For a player to be eligible for the squad, they must have played a minimum of 12 games throughout the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

“It’s obviously really great to be recognised in this squad, but it’s an achievement the whole club should be proud of to have five players nominated, the most in the AFL,” Ballard told SUNS Media.

“It’s a sign that we’re on the right track and our young players are really starting to develop and play great footy.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this young group of players we’ve got at the SUNS and we’re really committed to driving the club forward.”

It’s Powell’s first time being nominated for the squad, while the others have all been nominated previously, with Lukosius and King both being named in last year’s final 22.

The concept was first introduced in 2013 to acknowledge the young players who make an impact on their club and the competition so early in their careers.

Voting is open for seven days from August 11 to August 18, with the final team being announced on August 24 via the AFLPA.

SUNS members and fans can head here to submit their vote and show their support for all five players to earn selection in the final 22.
