A last-gasp goal has resigned the GC SUNS to its first defeat of the 2023 VFL season in Saturday’s Round 9 match against Werribee.

The Tigers finished the stronger of the two teams, kicking six goals to one in the final term to hand the SUNS its first loss, 14.7 (91) to 13.11 (89).

A goal deep into time-on from an unlikely source in Sandy Brock had the SUNS back in front before the Tigers re-took the lead with less than 20 seconds to play.

The SUNS best passage of the game came during the second quarter during which they kicked eight goals, but were unable to arrest momentum when the Tigers had their tails up after the main break.

Mabior Chol and James Tsitas finished as the leading goal kickers for Gold Coast, kicking three goals apiece in the first half.

Sam Flanders and Charlie Constable were the SUNS major ball winners while Ben Long had plenty of the pill in his first VFL outing of 2023.

The SUNS next face Footscray at TIO Stadium next Saturday evening in a curtain raiser to the club’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round AFL clash in Darwin.
