Versatile defender Mac Andrew is preparing for a pivotal season with the Gold Coast SUNS.

Able to impact games both in defence and up forward, the 22-year-old is eager to showcase more of his flexibility in 2026.

“I love sneaking forward and trying to kick goals, but I really enjoy the versatility I can bring to the team,” Andrew said.

“Down back is where I feel my best. I’d love to play 50-50 every game, but that’s where I feel strongest.”

Heading into his fifth season of AFL football, Andrew is focusing on combining his versatility with experience to make a consistent impact on the field.

“My focus is being more consistent and turning last year’s weaknesses into strengths,” Andrew told SUNS media.

“I want to play steady footy, get back to my best, and be proactive both in defence and forward. I want to impact the game whenever I’m on the field.

“If I get a chance at centre bounces, I feel like I can really help the team get the ball moving our way. When I’ve played in the ruck before, it was tough, but with the new rules, I feel like I can make a difference.

“I feel ready now to put everything I’ve learned into my game. It’s been a long journey but I’m happy now and keen for the season to start.”

The Egyptian-born Sudanese SUN was 18 months old when his family migrated to Victoria, Australia where he quickly fell in love with the nation’s game.

And in 2021, at 18 years of age, Andrew became the first South Sudanese player to be selected in the top 5 of the AFL Draft.

“From a young age, I’ve always loved the game,” Andrew reflected.

“For me, coming from a different country, footy was a way to connect with Australian culture.

“Playing local footy, getting recognised through the pathways, playing state teams, and eventually being drafted was an amazing opportunity.”

On the eve of the 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership season, Andrew says the young group’s energy is contagious.

“The team is tighter than ever. They’re loud and outgoing, which really keeps the energy high,” Andrew said.

“I’m really keen to see what the boys can do this year, especially the academy kids coming through.”

Off the back of a record-breaking campaign in 2025, the SUNS are soaring into 2026 with more members on board than ever before. Andrew says the support from fans across the Gold Coast hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“It’s great to see people wearing SUNS gear,” Andrew commented.

“I’ve never seen so many, and it’s really rewarding for us as players.”
