Academy member Fitzroy Greenwool wins Rd5 NEAFL Rising Star

Gold Coast SUNS Academy member Fitzroy Greenwool has earned the Round 5 NEAFL Rising Star nomination after lighting up the stage in Darwin on Saturday night.

Greenwool, 19, was among the SUNS best in a historic 70-point victory against NT Thunder – their first ever at TIO Stadium.

The exciting small forward collected 17 disposals (11 contested) and booted four goals in his best performance for the club.

Greenwool’s development has been rapid over his 15 games for Gold Coast since making his debut in Round 7, 2018.

Hailing from Kowanyama in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Greenwool relocated to Cairns in his teenage years and resided at AFL Cape York House.

He came through the AFL Cairns Juniors ranks for the Cape York Eagles and made his senior debut for the Cairns Saints in 2017.

Greenwool was spotted by the SUNS Academy and joined the program last year, kicking eight goals in 11 games.

Likened to Brisbane livewire Charlie Cameron, Greenwool is a gifted forward whose potential is limitless with his trademark dash and creative flare.

The NEAFL Rising Star is awarded to the most promising young talent in the NEAFL competition.

Nominees must be under the age of 21 and played less than 20 senior games (excluding games as AFL club academy players) at the start of the 2019 season.
