Gold Coast local Rory Thompson has signed a two year contract extension, committing to the GC SUNS until the end of the 2013 season.
General Manager – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said the club was delighted to have re-signed Thompson.
“We’re thrilled to have extended Rory’s contract for the next two years,”
“Rory’s progression during the second half of the season was exceptional and we believe he will play a big part in our team’s defence going forward.” Ashcroft said.
Born at the Gold Coast Hospital, Thompson joined the Gold Coast Football Club in 2009, and became the eighth Queensland teenager to commit to the club.
A Southport Sharks junior and a Queensland under-16 and under-18 representative, the strongly built, two-metre tall Thompson is the son of Sharks hall-of-famer and dual premiership full-forward Brett.
Thompson played for the GC SUNS during the NAB Cup but had to wait until Round16 to make his AFL Debut.
Starting the year as a ruckman/forward, GC SUNS reserves coach, Shaun Hart, swung Thompson to defence half way through the NEAFL season and he hasn’t looked back.
Stringing a number of solid games together at NEAFL level, Thompson forced his way into the senior side playing eight of the last nine games of the season and polling an impressive 30 votes in the Best and Fairest.
Thompson is over the moon to be continuing his AFL career at home on the Gold Coast.
“I’m rapt to be staying with the SUNS and to continue playing on the Gold Coast,” Thompson said.
“I love playing here on the Gold Coast and hope to play my career out here”
“My family has been involved with aussie rules on the Gold Coast for a long time and to be part of the SUNS from the beginning is something that I will cherish,” Thompson said.
