The Gold Coast SUNS forward line looks set to step up in 2013, with a number of key forwards now capable of matching it with the majority of experienced defenders in the competition.

Speaking with goldcoastfc.com.au before this morning’s training session, new GC SUNS assistant coach Mark Riley said the red-and-yellow faithful could expect the club’s key forwards to reach great heights this season.

The man dubbed “Bomber” has spent the last five seasons as midfield coach at Carlton.

Riley says the switch to strengthening the GC SUNS forward structure is a natural challenge that comes with developing a younger playing list.

“The playing group has been around for a few season now… so it’s almost a requirement for the SUNS to start showing an increased level in performance.”

But Riley is extremely confident that the group can start matching it against quality AFL opposition on a consistent basis, witnessing firsthand the damage the GC SUNS are capable of after the club’s stunning 8-point victory over Carlton at Metricon Stadium in Round 22.

“It certainly wasn’t pleasing being on the receiving end of that loss,” smirked Riley.

“Looking back though… (Brendan) Matera was very skilful, (Charlie) Dixon worked really hard, and (Tom) Lynch ended up booting four goals for the day, so the talent is certainly there.”

But with a healthy stock of key forwards at the club, Riley admits that a number of players would not be guaranteed regular selection in the senior side.

However, Riley was convinced the forward-half dilemma would only aid the development of all key position players.

“With the game being so interconnected, it’s vital for players to be able to be able to play both sides of the ground.”

“At least we have the tools on our list… to have guys to play on the (Travis) Clokes, the (Josh) Kennedys, the monsters of the competition.

"It's exciting, it's new, I like the idea that we're building something and I enjoy being part of that."
