It looms as the biggest challenge of the season for the Gold Coast SUNS, at home tonight to the ladder leading Sydney Swans.
For the GC SUNS who went desperately close against Brisbane seven days ago, opening bounce can’t come quick enough and while the bookmakers have the Gold Coast at a whopping $11 to upset the Swans, the GC SUNS skipper Gary Ablett feels the rapidly improving GC SUNS are a genuine chance.

I think that we have had a good week on the track and I am confident that if we can go out there and play the way we want to play, we are a chance, obviously Sydney are a great side, but there are a few little areas that we think we can get them.
Last weekend’s shattering final quarter fade against the Lions in QClash4 stung the young SUNS, however the lesions learnt have spurned the Gold Coasters on at training all week with Ablett pleased with their preparation and progress as a group.

“They are top of the ladder so they are obviously a fantastic side and they would have played finals for the past five to ten years so they have been consistent. It will be a big challenge but we are confident and anything can happen, hopefully we get our first home win for our fans.

“We are starting to get a bit of consistency which is great and we have still got so much to learn and we are learning at every training session and every game.”

Yet to hear the team’s victory song blasted out through the Metricon Stadium sound system, Ablett is determined to give the club’s loyal army of followers a long overdue win at home before the season has concluded, hinting that the time could be right to spring what would be one of the seasons biggest upsets.

“We have got a couple of opportunities before the end of the year and it starts this weekend against Sydney.

The consistency over the last three weeks has been fantastic and you can just tell the boys confidence is really starting to grow and they are really starting to understand what it takes to play at this level and be a successful side and we are taking that out to the training track and challenging everyone around the Club.
The skipper said the influence Brett Kirk has had on the playing and leadership group this season has been terrific and that he himself had learnt a lot from the former Swans Premiership Captain.

“I know personally he has helped me out a lot as a captain and he has challenged me at times and just really helped me improve as a leader and it’s great to have him around the football club.”

The GC SUNS also face the Swans in the afternoon’s NEAFL curtain raiser with that match getting underway from 3.00pm.
