Gold Coast SUNS members and supporters have welcomed a decision to move the 2012 Toyota AFL Premiership match between the Gold Coast SUNS and the Brisbane Lions from the GABBA to Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Originally scheduled to be played at the Gabba on the 21st of July, the relocation of the round seventeen Q-Clash encounter to Metricon Stadium gives the SUNS an eleventh home game.

Sport Minister, Phil Reeves, said the Gold Coast SUNS recently requested that the 2012 Q-Clash match be moved from the Gabba to Metricon Stadium, and the Government, through Stadiums Queensland agreed to the change of venue.

“We believe the move represents a “best fit” opportunity for 2012 based on the capacity of Metricon Stadium,” Mr Reeves said.

“I was host to some Lions fans at the recent International Rules match and they said it was a great opportunity to appreciate what Metricon Stadium is all about.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO, Travis Auld said the decision was a fantastic result for the club’s members and sports fans across the region.

“We are delighted that our supporters will now have the opportunity to watch their team take on the Lions at the home of the Gold Coast SUNS, Metricon Stadium”

“Our members have been vocal in their desire to have our Brisbane Lions home game transferred to the Gold Coast and I would like to thank Stadiums Queensland for their cooperation and understanding during a process which has yielded a fantastic result for AFL supporters on the Gold Coast. This decision will further build the healthy rivalry between us and the Lions into the future.” Mr. Auld said.

At a time when thousands of supporters are in the process of renewing their Gold Coast SUNS memberships, Auld said the decision to transfer the Q-Clash match would play a significant role in continuing the codes growth in South East Queensland.

“We are committed to growing our great game on the Gold Coast, and with the on-going support of the Queensland Government, Stadiums Queensland and the AFL, the Gold Coast will now boast another blockbuster AFL game on the coast next year. This is another reason for all GC SUNS and AFL supporters on the Coast to secure their seat in what is shaping up as a really exciting year ahead,” Mr. Auld said
