The Gold Coast SUNS will select Jaeger O’Meara with the first selection in the 2011 AFL mini draft after agreeing to a deal with the GWS Giants.
The GC SUNS exchanged selection 4 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft and a mid round one compensation selection (received from the Geelong Cats in a trade, after compensation for the loss of Gary Ablett) for the first selection in the mini-draft where the SUNS will select O’Meara and selection 31 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.
O’Meara, 17, is a dynamic midfielder who gained All-Australian selection as a 15-year-old and then was added to the AFL Academy after strong performances at last year’s under-16 national championship.
The Perth colt tested superbly during the recent academy camp. His 2.8sec. over 20m would have placed him third at last year’s AFL Draft Combine. He also showcased his endurance by reaching level 14.3 in the beep test.
O’Meara is technically sound on both feet, and can play anywhere in the midfield and is a solid overhead mark for his size.
General Manager - Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said the GC SUNS had achieved one of its targets heading into the exchange period.
“We are thrilled to have secured Jaeger through the mini-draft, it’s something we went into the exchange period wanting to do”
“We identified the importance of gaining a selection in this draft. The selection will spread the age of our list and allows us to gain the services of another elite young player from another draft pool.”
