Recently retired Gold Coast SUNS ruckman Josh Fraser says the club's new plan to win a premiership within three years may have raised eyebrows among its senior players, but says the club has assembled the talent required to make the plan a reality.
SUNS chairman John Witheriff announced the club's strategic vision 20-ONE-3 last Friday, under which Gold Coast want to achieve 20,000 members and win one premiership within three years.
Since entering the AFL in 2011, the SUNS have won six games, three in each of 2011 and 2012.
Fraser, who played 18 games at the SUNS over the past two seasons after 200 games at Collingwood from 2000-10, told SEN radio on Monday he had no doubt Gold Coast had enough talent to win a premiership, but questioned whether it could meet the strategic vision's ambitious time line.
"From my end having spent two years there I've got no doubt they've assembled enough talent at their footy club to win a premiership," Fraser said.
"They've certainly got the character there to back that up and I think the coaching staff is in place and have got everything they need to be successful."
"Whether it's in three years or five years remains to be seen, but they've certainly got the ingredients there."
Asked whether he would have been happy as a player to hear Witheriff publicly announce such an ambitious premiership goal, Fraser said some senior SUNS players received the news with a degree of scepticism.
"It's funny I think some of the older guys may have raised an eyebrow or two but the younger guys probably wouldn't know any different," Fraser said.
"We've seen clubs before come out and say similar things. I guess all you're doing is you're trying to make a statement particularly with the position the Gold Coast SUNS are in, they want to validate their spot in the AFL."
"It's quite a bold statement. I guess again from my point of view sitting back I think good on them. It's obviously what every club wants to achieve, but to come out and have the balls to say that's what you want to do, and I guess be held accountable to that, is a big call.
"But it's one that I'm sure they're going to work very hard towards."
