The Gold Coast SUNS have added another piece to the puzzle of its 2023 AFL squad with versatile forward Brodie McLaughlin officially signing on in red and gold.

McLaughlin joins the club as a pre-season supplementary selection after impressing since being invited in early December to train with the SUNS throughout pre-season.

The 25-year-old is fresh off a strong VFL campaign with Frankston in which he kicked 24 goals in 12 games, adding depth and versatility to an exciting SUNS forward line-up.

“It’s been a lot of hard work to get here but I am just so excited to be officially joining the SUNS and beginning my professional career,” McLaughlin said.

“I have absolutely loved training with the club over the pre-season so far and am determined to continue to work hard to help the team achieve success next season.”

McLaughlin, who is currently on pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast with his new teammates, becomes the SUNS’ second 2023 pre-season supplementary selection following the signing of former Hawk and Kangaroo Jed Anderson late last year.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer Brodie a place on our list for next season, he has worked hard for this opportunity and we know that hard work will continue this year,” GC SUNS General Manager of Player Talent and Strategy Craig Cameron said.

“Brodie has already formed great connections with the playing group and coaches in his time training with the club and we’re excited to see his AFL journey begin with the SUNS.”

After leaving two lists spots available following the 2022 NAB AFL Draft period, the club had the opportunity to select a player during the pre-season supplementary selection period which closes on February 15 or hold the spot available for the 2023 NAB AFL mid-season draft.

Former Magarey Medal winner James Tsitas, who earned an AFL debut with the club in 2022, was also secured in similar fashion prior to the 2022 season.
