Next year’s AAMI AFL Origin clash will have a notable Gold Coast flavour with two more club representatives locked in this week for the February 14 match in Perth.

Leadership group member Wil Powell is among seven players confirmed today by the AFL to represent Western Australia against Victoria at Optus Stadium, becoming the first SUN locked in to don the ‘Black Swan.’

The match will mark the first time the Scarborough junior has lined up opposite captain Noah Anderson and Brownlow Medal winner Matt Rowell who have both been named in the Victorian side.

Anderson and Rowell will have a familiar face in the coaching ranks with SUNS Senior Assistant Coach Shaun Grigg named as part of Chris Scott’s Big V coaching panel.

Grigg previously spent four seasons at Geelong under Scott as both a Development and Assistant Coach before joining the SUNS following the 2023 season.

“It’s an incredible achievement for these boys and we’re privileged to have a number of members of our club chosen to represent their states,” GC SUNS Senior Coach Damien Hardwick said.

“Wil plays with his heart on his sleeve every time he goes on the field and I’m positive that won’t change whether he’s in a SUNS guernsey or the Western Australia colours.

“Grigga has a wealth of experience over a great career both as a player and now a coach and he has been pivotal to the steps forward we’re taking here on the Gold Coast.”
