A spirited Gold Coast Football Club training session and intra-club match at Carrara was anything but ordinary this morning when Senior Coach Guy McKenna took up a familiar position in the backline.

The former West Coast Eagles Champion had just come on to replace one of the young players and went to intercept a pass meant for GCFC Captain Marc Lock which would have opened up an opportunity for his team to score a goal.

Instead his heroics resulted in the club’s first serious injury with the Coach breaking his leg in two places after colliding with Lock awkwardly. The GCFC players stood stunned as their coach bravely lay motionless on the ground before being treated and rushed to hospital.

As soon as he left the ground it was business as usual as the practice match resumed under the watchful eye of Assistant Coaches Ken Hinkley and Shaun Hart.

McKenna is expected to be on crutches for a few weeks and advised he will be back at training as soon as possible and the injury wont impact on any of the GCFC preparations for the upcoming VFL season starting on April 10. While “Bluey” is laid up the club is expected to keep him busy on the phone drumming up new members to reach our 10,000 target!
