Gold Coast Football Club players came face to face with one of the world's best surfers when they met yesterday at Burleigh Heads beach.

Bobby Martinez, who is currently ranked equal third in the world after making the semi finals of the Quicksilver Pro last month, has thrown his support behind the club by becoming a member and met some  players to learn the basics of AFL.

The players also got a tips on surfing, with many of the players purchasing boards from Martinez's good friend and board shaper Darren Handley of DHD (Known as Base Surfboards).

Handley who is an avid AFL fan and still plays at Masters level, has shaped boards for 5 of the last 6 world titles.

This includes Mick Fanning in 2007 and 2009 and Stephanie Gilmore who has won the last three titles in a row.

Martinez will now compete in the next ASP world surf title event at Bells beach over Easter before returning to the Gold Coast, where he is keen some of the GCFC's VFL matches in 2010 to learn more about AFL and support the team.

And look out next time you're at the beach as a majority of GCFC players have just completed their bronze medallions at local surf club Kurrawa, and are now armed with surf boards and advice from one of the
worlds best.  They may just be on the wave next to you!
