Young defender Wil Powell has committed his future to the Gold Coast SUNS by signing a four-year contract extension.

The extension will see Powell remain at the SUNS until the end of the 2025 AFL season.

“I love this club and couldn’t be happier to extend my time here,” Powell said.

“Gold Coast is home now.

“I’m looking forward to chasing success with the group of players and staff we’ve got here at the club.”

Originally drafted as a wingman with pick 19 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft from Western Australia, Powell has shown his prowess as part of a back six for the club in recent times.

The 21-year-old has featured in 35 AFL matches for the SUNS, including 15 in a modified 2020 Premiership season, where his elite running ability, hunger for the contest and ball use was highlighted.

“Individually and collectively we’ve worked extremely hard over the last couple of months, it’s up to us now to deliver for our members and fans,” Powell said.

GC SUNS General Manager – Football Operations Jon Haines said it was a great show of support by Powell to commit long-term to club.

“We have a playing group that is building a genuine commitment to the club and the Gold Coast community. Wil is another example of this. We’re looking forward to having Wil and his family as part of the SUNS family for many years to come,” Haines said.

Powell’s extension through to the end of 2025 follows that of fellow defender Charlie Ballard who committed his future top the club in December.
