The Gold Coast SUNS are thrilled to announce that Sam Flanders has extended his contract with the football club until 2023.

Flanders, 19, has played 14 games in his second season at the club and displayed the vast array of skills and work rate that saw the club select the young midfielder/forward with pick 11 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.

Excited by his future with the club, Flanders was quick to recognise the opportunity the SUNS gave him to fulfil his AFL dreams.

“The club has believed in me since day one and has given me the opportunity to learn and play senior football,” Flanders said.

“It’s exciting what the upcoming years hold for the club.

“We all see the potential to have success with such a talented, committed group and we need to make sure we continue to work hard and deliver for Gold Coast’s members and fans.”

After debuting as a small forward in 2020, Flanders has spent more time through the midfield during the 2021 AFL Premiership Season.

“The move into playing more midfield time this year has provided me with a new challenge, adapting to a new role and testing myself alongside some of the competition’s best.”

Gold Coast SUNS General Manager of Football Jon Haines said Flanders was an important part of the club’s future.

“Sam has worked extremely hard to develop his game and is now starting to see that pay off with his consistent performances at AFL level. Sam is part of a driven group of players who are determined to build a successful culture and we are thrilled with Sam’s commitment to his teammates and the club.”
