GC SUNS rookies Hewago Oea and Patrick Murtagh have signed one-year contract extensions until the end of the 2022 Premiership Season.

Oea first joined the SUNS on an international scholarship from Papua New Guinea in 2018 before graduating to the Rookie List in 2020.

A lively small forward, Oea played seven VFL matches for the SUNS in 2021, averaging 19 disposals, three tackles and four marks per game while also booting three goals.

“I’m super excited to sign on with the club for this coming season, I’m really stoked to get back on the list again and I’m really happy,” Oea said.

“For me, coming from a different country into a different environment here, I feel comfortable – the boys and staff have helped me a lot.

“I’ve learned heaps to get some confidence and start my year off strong.

“I can’t wait for this season. My biggest goal is to stay injury free so I can play good footy and hopefully get a game (in the AFL).”

Murtagh is a SUNS Academy graduate and joined the club in late 2019 as a Queensland Zone Selection.

The 20-year-old is a former champion decathlete and played nine VFL matches for the SUNS in 2021 as a key forward and ruck, kicking five goals.

“I’ve loved my time at the SUNS so far and am really excited to sign a contract extension for next season,” Murtagh said.

“The coaches and staff have been really good in helping me develop into the best player I can be and I hope to continue to show that development next season.”

The SUNS will play West Coast in Round 1 of the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership Season on Sunday March 20.
