The Gold Coast SUNS will be without Elise Barwick for the remainder of the AFLW season, after the forward suffered an ACL injury.
Barwick was taken off the field at training, with subsequent scans revealing the 26-year-old will require surgery on her left knee.
“Unfortunately, Elise has sustained a ruptured ACL in her left knee. We will work with specialists and Elise to devise the most appropriate rehabilitation plan,” Gold Coast SUNS AFLW Physiotherapist Jasmine Herlihy said.
Gold Coast SUNS Head of Women’s Football Fiona Sessarago added, “We’re devastated for Elise. After dedicating herself to a strong pre-season it is unfortunate that she will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
“Our highest priority now is supporting Elise through her recovery, and we look forward to seeing her return stronger than ever.”
The SUNS are hopeful to regain experience in Round 2 with several players likely to be available for selection on Thursday.
“Claudia Whitfort, Katie Lynch, Clara Fitzpatrick and Jac Dupuy will all train fully this week and we’re confident they will be in contention for Round 2,” Herlihy added.

The SUNS can confirm in this week’s Qscan Injury Update that midfielder Bailey Humphrey will be unavailable for Friday night’s trip to Adelaide to face the Power.
Humphrey missed Saturday’s match against the Giants with a knee injury and is eyeing a return to availability in either next Wednesday’s rescheduled Opening Round match against Essendon, or Finals Week 1 should the SUNS qualify.
The SUNS could also be bolstered in the final match of the season with sidelined duo Daniel Rioli (leg) and Will Graham (hamstring) pushing to be available to face the Bombers next week.
After being unavailable last weekend with a knee complaint, David Swallow will train fully this week in a bid to be available for selection this Friday night.
Sam Clohesy remains unavailable in the medium term as he continues recovery from an ankle injury.
